austin at a glance

With the charm of a small town and cosmopolitan appeal, Austin is the heart of the Lone Star State. From music and museums to parks and politics, Austin has it all. Home to the Longhorns and the nation's largest urban colony of bats, the city is as unique they come.  Here's just a taste of what Austin has to offer.

The Austin Chamber of Commerce has just about all the information you'll need, but for a more personal glimpse om my homwtown, be sure to visit my Austin Insight & Photo Gallery page

Music & film.  Widely known for its diverse music community, Austin has it all, from blues, country western, reggae, jazz, swing, and rock performed in various clubs around the city.  In March, Austin hosts the annual South X Southwest music conference, a week-long event that has become one of the nation's most famous and influential showcases for new bands and star attractions.
Austin is also becoming a center for filmmaking.  Directors Richard Linklater, Robert Rodriguez, Mike Judge, and Terence Malick have links to Austin, and a variety of movies have been filmed in the area.

An intellectual hub.  Austin is home to numerous institutes of higher learning, including Austin Community College, Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Concordia Lutheran College, Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest, Huston-Tillotson College, St. Edward's University, and the University of Texas.

Business center.  Not only does Austin know how to have fun, but it is also a business center, including high-tech, biotechnology, music, and film.  Austin has frequently been ranked as a top place to do business and advance a career.  The city has an entrepreneurial spirit and wealth of resources.  Dell Computer Corporation, Motorola, IBM, Advanced Micro Devices, and Applied Materials are among Austin's top 20 employers.

Enjoy our outdoors.  Austin is an oasis in the Lone Star state.  With its hills, creeks, parks, and Colorado River, the city has a beautiful landscape and over 15,000 acres of parkland.  The city has more than 32 miles of inner city trails capped by the 10 mile hike and bike trail around Lake Austin.  There's plenty of swimming too with 47 public pools.  Avid golfers will be happy with Austin's six municipal golf courses and myriad private facilities.

Sports.  If watching the UT Longhorns doesn't keep you busy, the Austin area is home to two minor league professional sports teams.  The Round Rock Express baseball team and the Austin Ice Bats hockey team round out sports in the Capital city.  We even have a roller derby...

And we have bats!  The city is home to the nation's largest urban bat colony found under the Congress Avenue Bridge.  More than 100,000 people flock to the Congress Avenue Bridge each year to watch 1.5 million Mexican freetail bats emerge for nightly feedings.
